Thom -- I can echo the experience of your friend with ADHD who found the Army structure liberating. My story is not of the U.S. Army but from 11 years of living in Switzerland.

Swiss society is VERY rules based. The joke is that the French invented bureaucracy, the Germans adopted it, but the Swiss perfected it.

What I found over the years was that my creativity was exceptional when much of life was predictable to the extent of being boring. Once you get past the natural human push back about the differences in the way things are done from what you have experienced (CH vs. USA), the structure can be quite liberating. Many of the expats from the U.S. could not handle having rules from everything, including when you can run the dishwasher or what you can put in a trash bag.

It does end up being counter-intuitive!
