I agree with Thom that meditation aids (devices) can be very useful for those beginning a meditation practice. I'm not sure that long-term use is prudent though.

I began my practice around 30 years ago using a neuro-entrainment device produced by Zygon. It was great. I only used it for about 6 months and abandoned its use as I had learned to meditate without the crutch.

In my heyday, I was meditating 3-4 hours every day and it was amazing to say the least. I was unflappable. I'll never forget getting a flat tire one cold rainy night. I had only the briefest moment of annoyance that was quickly replaced with joy that the unfortunate incident provided me with an opportunity to practice mindfulness and other lessons from the spiritual path.
