Why do so many children and adults with ADD/ADHD seem to lack the normal social graces or ability to make and keep friends, and what can be done about it?
One of my former colleagues was involved in the introduction of SEL in an inner-city Colorado school district (where, incidentally Senator Michael Bennet was the Superintendent of Schools for a few years). The results have been impressive.
Another set of curricula that helps in this area is the Expeditionary Learning (EL) and Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound (ELOB). EL's website is https://eleducation.org. ELOB schools combine outdoor activities such as camping, climbing, and "expeditions" into learning based on Outward Bound's programs. ELOB is similar to the "Waldschule" in Austria and Germany, which are outdoor focused programs often in a wooded setting.
Both of these approaches leverage social learning rather than just classroom instruction.
Two other approaches are SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) and Expeditionary Learning.
SEL is succinctly described in the book "The Triple Focus" by Daniel Goleman and Peter Senge describes the basis of this area in the ideas of Self, Other, and Outer (systems thinking). Link to the book's website: https://www.keystepmedia.com/shop/triple-focus-new-approach-education/#.VE6YP-d9iUY
